smeSpire will be present at IMAGINE 2013, one of the 2013 Dublin Conferences.

Giacomo Martirano will make the presentation “Public Sector funds in Europe unlocking GI opportunities”, within the EUROGI Conference IMAGINE 2013.

One of the smeSpire project task is devoted to set a business model aiming at enabling already established and new geo-ICT SMEs in Europe to convert technological innovation which is inside the INSPIRE implementation process into economic value.

In this context, focus has been given on the revenue streams, as one of the main components of this business model and it was completed a survey and further analysis of the funds put at disposal of the European GI community by the Public sector during the period 2008-2012 in the frame of public tenders for the procurement of services and call for proposals for R&D projects.

In this presentation are shown the results of this analysis, including statistics and trends potentially useful for a better assessment of market opportunities for the GI community in Europe.

The Convention Centre Dublin has been chosen to host a series of global and European level conferences on geographic digital information. Running from 4-8 March 2013 the conferences will look at how digital information, and geographic information in particular, can be used to address environmental, economic development and governance issues.

The week of conferences is adopted as a Presidency Associated event under the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Its aim falls in line with that of Ireland: to draw from “Europe’s values and strengths to the full and prove that the European method of decision-making can produce the necessary changes,” as outlined in the programme of the Presidency.

The First Eye on Earth User conference (4-6 March 2013), organised by the European Environment Agency (EEA), will kick off the week by opening a discussion around environmental data sharing. The starting point of this discussion will be a Resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly, “The Future We Want,” and in particular article 274 which places Eye on Earth firmly at the centre of efforts to collect and use environmental data for sustainable development policy making, programing and project operations. The user conference will gather high level expert speakers from across the globe such as Phil Hogan – the Irish Minister for the Environment, Jack Dangermond – President of Esri, Volker Liebig – Director of Earth Observation programmes at the European Space Agency, Barbara Ryan – Secretariat Director of the intergovernmental Group on Earth Observations and Jacqueline McGlade – Executive Director of the EEA amongst many other prominent presenters. Falling between two Eye on Earth Abu Dhabi Summits, this User Conference represents an important opportunity to launch the Global Network of Networks as a fundamental component of the Eye on Earth network to promote and facilitate global environmental information networking.

The ENVIROFI project, funded within the Future Internet Public-Private Partnership programme of the European Commission’s FP7 research programme, will hold its final event – the ENVIROFI Day conference – on 6 March 2013. The main focus of the conference will be on the interplay between environmental and geospatial informatics and future internet technology, including demonstrations of results in the areas of biodiversity, air quality, and marine assets. The conference will also focus on the innovation opportunities and potentialities for SMEs and stakeholders in the area of environmental and geospatial information, services, and applications. The ENVIROFI Day conference will gather high level expert speakers in the environmental service and Future Internet technology such as Peter Fatelning -Deputy Head of Unit Net Innovation – European Commission DG Connect ),and Professor Fiona Regan – Dublin City University.  The ENVIROFI Day conference is particularly targeted to SMEs and stakeholders interested in the potentialities and opportunities of innovative environmental services.

The conference will also focus on the innovation opportunities and potentialities for SMEs and stakeholders in the area of environmental and geospatial information, services, and applications.

The European Umbrella Organisation for Geographic Information, EUROGI, will hold its imaGIne conference on 7-8 March 2013. The EUROGI conference will explore the opportunities available in existing Geographic Information and geo technologies for addressing economic growth, governance and environmental issues. The Joint Research Centre will present an opportunity to discuss the evolving European Union Location Framework and the Commission’s Directorate General Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT) will explore issues associated with the Digital Agenda for Europe. The conference will also focus on trends which will shape the future geographic information environment and the opportunities inherent in the near to mid-term future.

High level globally recognised keynote speakers (Geraldine McBride formally President of SAP North America; Professor Mike Goodchild of the University of California; Mark Reichardt, CEO of the Open Geospatial Consortium; Suha Ulgen Head of the UN Centre of Excellence for Spatial Data Infrastructures; Ed Parsons, Geospatial Technologist at Google; Jacqueline McGlade and Minister Phil Hogan) will be participating and will be fully involved in panel sessions where key aims are to identify the action and policy implications of the presentations and discussions during the two conference days. The main focus of the EUROGI conference is non-technical in nature.
